Thriving not just surviving social isolation!

So it may not be a surprise to many of you that I grew up homeschooled so come pre-prepared for social isolation to an extent. On top of that I also live with some health issues that continue to keep me at a distance from many (not all) normal daily social activities so over the years I have learned and honed some skills for not going bat nuts crazy!

As an aside anything I write about kids is from my point of view as a kid not having any children of my own, but being a kid that wouldn't see other kids for extended periods of time. I believe you are the best parent for your kid so please don’t take anything I say as advice just options of how some may get through this easier.

I take the problem like this: Accept Your Reality. Once you know Where You Are you can figure out What To Do. There is SO much to do!

Accept your reality:

COVID 19 isn't going anywhere soon. We have weeks/months of this new reality this will be hard on you and your family. You are not powerless, you just have a new job or jobs now. First most important job is your health! Why health? Well taking care of yourself makes you better able to take care of those around you, the better you are doing the better you are actively fighting this!

Some health tips:

Identifying what you normally do to take care of your health is an easy way to start taking control of your situation. Is your morning coffee your routine, make that important! Are you a very social person, then call or video chat the people you would normally chat with at work. Is going to the gym how you "get back to okay" then work out at that same times, stick with it and so on. Humans are creatures of habit, give yourself the habits that make you you, make them important!

Also if you have kids this is a great time to teach them self care and caring for others "mommy needs her coffee so she can be her best today do you want to help mommy by learning to make her coffee?" As a kid I loved making mom her coffee in the morning, it was a way I could show love that was “helping". My mom loved having coffee made when she got up. This kind of thing applies for drawing a bath, or exercising together, gardening, making face masks, cooking, really any activity that you enjoy that can help you be healthier (these can be applied to partners as well).

Don't try and be overly positive or fall in to negativity, be realistic about where you and the people in your household are. Doing the "Peak and Pit of your day" will help you together learn what is working and what isn't, then as things change you can adjust. It’s still surprising what sticks out as the peak and pit to my husband. We have known each other a long time but he still remembers things I forget, things that I didn't know effected him I can easily change, like that toothpaste he would normally never say anything about but if he’s had a really good day and the only thing that’s annoying him is how much he dislikes the toothpaste, I can easily change brands and that small thing makes our life just a bit better. Also it helps you get in the habit of Practicing Gratitude.

Alone time! This may seem like a given but if you're in a house with a lot of people make alone time happen regularly. We all need time to ourselves, this helps us be better to the house around us so when you need it, kindly say so. Kids can do this too maybe not for as long as we would like but having 30 minutes of alone play helps them learn to entertain themselves. Also if you have more than one kid you can pair of with each kid/parent or kid/kid time. Special time alone with mom was GOLD when I was young and many kids love your complete focus on them for a short time.

Don't get too lonely. We have so many ways to connect you can even Call a Swede Call a Swede the country of Sweden would love for you to make a friend with one of their people! Anyhow From face time to Google Meet, gaming online together or just simply calling your old Buddys it's way better than just Facebook. We all have things we don’t put online but need to share. I bet your friends would love to hear from you. I know a lot of us have social anxiety but your friends are going to get lonely too and it would mean a lot if you made the phone call that they haven't gotten the courage to make yet.

If you’re feeling alone and struggling, you can also reach out to The Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741 or National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.

Where You Are:

TP somehow became a thing with preparing for this all but if you can step back and look at what you really need it's still very easy to get what's needed. Lowes still has TP, hand towels and basic cleaning supplies and there are many other places like that that you can find what you need. As to groceries many grocery stores are doing online shopping that they will either deliver or you can pick up at a set time. It's a much safer option and it's not going anywhere soon. Congress is working on Coronavirus Relief so people will still have a basic income through this but you can still file for unemployment for this short time. This counts as a disaster so get the help you need! What to do if you lost work in Missouri or Kansas because of the coronavirus

Lots of people have gone through social isolation from Astronauts to Royal Navy Submariners the strategies are similar but it helps to hear from the professionals.

What To Do:

Forgive me this is going to be long! I will update this with lots of links, sites, games even concerts as I come across them. Keep sharing them too this is a resource for everyone!

DON’T GIVE UP! This is really important as weddings, graduations, reunions and vacations get cancelled. Do the thing in some small way at home. If you want your anniversary to be on a certain day, have your minster marry you at your house with one witness. We can all come together after all of this and eat cake but for now do what you can and know how bad everyone wants to be there! If prom is the thing you're missing, group video call all your friends that you were going to do dinner with and have a fancy dinner together with them. Graduation let your family throw a graduation for you and make you stand up and walk in front of the living room in your moms robe! The point is Still Celebrate Life! It is vitally important to continue to Live and not just make it by but Live life as best you can in these moments. If you don't have anything to celebrate pick someones half birthday or surviving today, give yourself permission to celebrate!

Congratulations you are now a government paid Writer, Painter, Musician, what ever your dream is! You have the time now and are being paid to "tune out the world and focus on your passion". Aren't we fancy now lol but really this is basically a government grant to focus on that thing you have always wanted to try, that thing in the back of your closet you used to love in high school but don't have time for now. Take this opportunity and do the thing Zhu Li!

Spouses share your thing! Hay you know that person you love, I bet they have a way to waste time they would LOVE to share with you! This is a great time to take an interest. Now if your spouse takes an interest in a "you thing" then BE NICE, don't expect them to like your thing the way you do! Find some part of it that they would like or would interest them. A great example is video games, now is your chance to get your spouse in to video games but don't just throw them in to your favorite game, find one that you know they would like some part of. I'll do a list of couple friendly video games later. Same with board games don't just play your favorite, they are taking time to learn your thing so take time to show a part they could be interested in, so both of you are doing a little to come together. Explain why it means so much to you because just their love of you will help them care a little about why it's a thing to you and you can build on that.

Be an adult. No really, now is a good time to look up your local elections and get educated on local issues, your elected officials record and stance on important issues. Not the funnest thing to do but definitely a way to stay actively contributing to society. Find your local ballet here Local and find out who votes most like you in politics I side with

Are you a person that needs a sense of accomplishment? I'll put calls to action here:

Okay now to games, here is a list of board games you can download. Here are some card games you can play with friends online . Also if you don't have Steam why not? There are so many games you can play to just chill out, learn something or let your brain rot for a min. If you're looking for education-ish games for the older kids Dawn of Man and Surviving Mars are both really good games. If you have teens that you don't want to hear from for hours on end and don't want to just let them mindlessly play what ever game these will do the trick! For general play I like Pine, Gris, Subnautica and House Flipper. On this platform Couples games we enjoy are Starbound, Quest Hunter, Rising World and Baldur's Gate. Other platforms Minecraft, Gears of War, any Halo. Board games cribbage, splendor, love letter, DnD okay so DnD can be played online with friends easier than you think, we have used D20 but here is a list of other DnD online things. We used to Love Wow and HOTS but with blizzard not standing up for free speech we closed our accounts but they are good for couples that game. A maybe more ethical option is ESO which is still good. Do Not play We Were Here unless you want a divorce and only play Portal 2 if your marriage is strong, it's a great game but it Will Test You! True Dungeon published this free online version Cogwind 3D

I have heard that this is the Best time to start Stardew Valley however due to the Thousands of hours people love putting in to this game I have held off but it will probably be my fist quarantine game purchase.

Dip your toe into homeschooling, Its the biggest coronavirus trend but it's been around and establish for a long time . . . Hmmm maybe now is a good time for a homeschooling PSA: Hay so when you set up a structure of unquestionable authority and are isolated from outside influences it has a tendency to make parents less parents and more monarchs. So be mindful of how strict you get. Without outside eyes homeschool kids end up with a lot of abuse, so maybe don't get too attach to the homeschooling thing in the long run or learn how to do it right with lots of community classes and big groups of homeschool co-ops... because in the long run social isolation is not the way we are meant to live.

Lets talk about IUD's

We don't talk about sexual education enough in the USA, especially continued sexual education. Nothing with our bodies are set and forget for long, things change and we need to keep up with how we change as we age, so facing my third IUD I became very upset when my doctor told me different information then the manufactures website, saying that Lyletta and Kyleena are the same... they are Not! So lets go over what I've found, I'm not a doctor, I'm a consumer and Very upset about all the misinformation flying around. Specifically I'm going to look at what the drug manufacturers are telling us from their own websites. focusing on actual physical size and drug dosage. Understanding that IUD stands for IntraUterine Device, they are one 99% affective and last for YEARS. Really IUD's are some of the Best birth control out there! Each one has goods and bads and you should really talk to your doctor about what's best for you but do a little research first so if your doc is little turned around by all this, you still feel good about what you decide is best for you.

First the names.

Mirena: This was my first IUD, back in the day when we didn't have the smaller IUD's for women that haven't had children. 5 years no babies Awesome! Most of the time no period and about once every three to five months cramps so bad they put me on the floor but still better then labor pains so I count this as a Win!

Liletta: This is what my doc had all set up for me, works for 5 years. I did the research and am glade I did because I'm going to go for Kyleena.

Kyleena: Why Kyleena well according to the Liletta website it's the same size as Skyla but last 5 years

Skyla also known as Jaydess: This is the one I have now it's like a lovely vacation from my period! I love everything about it accept that it's only 3years.

There is also ParaGard no hormones, copper and Large! Oh but did I mention it's good for 10 Years!

Now for screen shots of comparisons this is from the doctors side of the Liletta website

MY Doctor straight up told me that after consulting with the drug rep that Liletta was the same size and dose as the Kyleena But Right on the Liletta web site it blatantly says its 52mg and the larger 32mm so more comparable to the Mirena. But if you look at the grater internet you see what my doctor was saying everywhere! This IS NOT Accurate! but is one of the first sites to pop up when trying compare your IUD options... So Aggravating!

So back to the facts given my the manufacturers this is the Bayer website

So if you're going from the horses mouth this is how the amount of hormones compare. However some of the confusion comes from the amount of medication tapering off over time.

Mirena: 52mg levonorgestrel

Liletta: 52mg Levonorgestrel

Kyleena: 19.5mg levonorgestrel

Skyla also known as Jaydess: 13.5mg levonorgestrel

ParaGard no hormones

Now to Size.

link to this pamphlet witch has a good bit of info and this pic

Size is kinda important to me, as I Have Never had kids! You have to get these things through your cervix and for me or anyone not in your doctors office this is painful as all #%^&*! You know think about it like this: when women are all in pain about to give birth but they won't start things till she's dilated to 10cm. Well the Kyleena( one of the smallest IUDs) insertion tool is a 3.8 cm so close to half way to go time with a baby!... okay so I'm being dramatic here but they LIE, it Hurts! It hurts a lot and If this whole blog doesn't prove how angry I get when lied to, then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ shrug.

The biggest is Paragard, though I'm not happy about the little disclosure of "Not actual size." witch seams to defeat the purpose of having a size comparison on their site.

A thank you to Bayer for this lovely dice size comparison for their larger Mirena. Which is basically the same size as Liletta witch can we take a minute and just shake our head at them naming this Liletta, not only is is hard to remember but it just to close to Lolita for anyone to be comfortable with it as birth control...

Bayers Kyleena

and for their smaller Skyla notice the hot pink background as this is heavily marketed to the younger (never had kids) group of women the whole reason we have this smaller version is for the younger child free market so if that's you awesome it was literally made for you enjoy never forgetting to take a pill.

So for Size we are at

ParaGard 1.41in or 36mm long by 1.6in

Mirena: 1.29in or 32mm long (by from what I can find about 32mm)

Liletta: 1.259in or 32mm long by x32

Kyleena: 1.18in or 29.972mm long (by from what I can find about 28mm)

Skyla also known as Jaydess: 1.18in or 29.972mm long (by from what I can find about 28mm)

I hope this clarifies some of the mass of confusing info out there on IUDs, they like everything with your health are a complicated topic so keep looking in to them. They are scary to get, Lovely to have and you won't know how your body will react to any birth control method till you try them. I know this one has a steep learning curve but the pay off is worth it in my opinion.

Liletta - Lolita shakes head yep not going to get over that one any time soon...

Tanning a dear hide...(GraphicPhotos)

So I really like trying new things, and don't do well with people not believing I can do something... So two years ago when at a SCA meeting someone mentioned they had an extra dear hide and offered it for anyone that would use it. This was met with a lot of people talking about how hard it was tan dear hides and that it was about impossible to tan a dear hid without the hair slipping. Well I jumped at the opportunity and brought the frozen thing home. I rally hate wasting and new with all the crafts i do I could find a use for it. I did a tun of research (notice a theme here I love being well informed)I found and pretty much used this videos formula.

I built a frame while the hide thawed out in a trash bag submerged in a big sink. I put hook and eye screws around the frame, to string up and starching the hide. Then put out big painters floor covers and rested the frame agent the wall.

I stretched the skin out and strung it up pulling the string taunt to really stretch the skin, then spent most the night cleaning the thing. Any fat left on the hide will spoil and rot.

Once fleshed I covered the fleshed side with the egg and mayo mixture(not very sanitary but I didn't have the brain nor did I really want it do a brain tan but the basic idea is a balance of lips to protein). From there I got pneumonia from the cold night spent fleshing the hide so I ignored it for most of two weeks, witch worked out fine but I should have gone our and massaged in the mayo/egg mix every other day or so to soften it up. Then we made a kick but fire and with apple wood and Jack Daniel's smocking chips in it made a log tepee over the fire and stetted the hide over to smock for 4-6 hours.

This kills bacteria and keeps bacteria growth down just like smoking fish. Once it was smoked it smelled unbelievably good! At this point it was dried completely, we took it down and rubbed it agents some trees to soften it up some. It still turn out stiff but the hair didn't slip at all and for dear hair that is hollow that is actually quit the accomplishment.

Well over a year later and my hubby goes hunting with a friend and brings back a new hide for me to tan so by this time I've been mulling over what I'd do differently in the future and what I did and didn't like about the process. mostly it was gross and I got pneumonia so this time we covered the couch and I worked inside, cleaning the hide wail watching anime.

Now when it comes to the tanning again most animals have a brain big enough to tan their own hide, brains being mostly composed of protein and lots of fat, the gears stated turning. Girls regularly use a high protein serum with plenty of Oils(I.E. lipids, stuff like coconut oil or olive oil, vitamin E). Shampoo and conditioner is made to make hair stay soft strong and beautiful. So I went to the store, and half for the protein content half for the irony I got main and tale shampoo and conditioner. I really did look at a lot of different shampoos but settled on the main and tale so once the hid was clean(she was a fat one!) I simply gave the whole thing a good lather up and rub down in the tub. On the flesh side I worked it in, and was very gentle with the fur side, it was lathered rinsed and repeated.

I have to say I really enjoyed how clean it was after this most all the bold came out of the skin, and whatever else she was rolling in before becoming food. Then we stretched and nailed it up in the basement (we moved and I couldn't take the frame with me). One final go over to get any little missed bits and call it good to cure.

Now here is were I think I messed up, I chickened out and rubbed salt on it kill bacteria(smocking was not an option and the basement is not a healthy please so it seamed best to stop anything from growing) and help it dry. We left it to dry with a dehumidifier, going down to curry comb it, about every 4 days or so, to make it more swayed like and soft.

Well three weeks later after working on it and brushing the hide the little ends that got the lest amount of salt are perfect! However the main part is far to stiff and almost brittle. I weill say it would make a Great ground barrier for camping or caving!

Do you see how shiny this pelt is! Main and Tail for the Win!

So if I'm ever crazy enough to do this again then I'm not putting salt on any of it!!! I think that a high protein/lipid shampoo and conditioner then smoking will make the best hide for crafting use!

If you are scared, angry, confused. Here I made you this.

This election was fought and won by fear. Now fear is spreading across the nation spreading distrust and destruction. The way to conquer fear is by confronting it head on with honesty! So lets be honest, we could have and should have done more, so now is the time to stand up and do more! We still live in the greatest country on earth and with that comes freedom of speech, the right to peaceful protest, and the ability to take part in politics at every level. We only have two years till midterm elections, that may seem like a long time but in the face of change that is a blink of an eye. So here are some of the things(big and small) we need to work on starting now. We need champions, heroes don't have to be perfect they just have to stand up for others in times of need! Those in need or have been threatened by this new administration include but aren't limited to People of color, Disabled, Women, Immigrants, LBGT, Education... our planet.

In no particular order lets dig in to what you really can do! Most important remember you have strength, in mind, body and spirit. Even if you only have a little to give of any those categories, there are many of us and it all adds up! This vote was 47% vs 48% there are "slightly" more who voted for rights. We are a big community and you are not alone. Make sure to speak out, not just for change but also to let all who afraid know that they are not alone. That this is not okay and we are all going to do our best in this uncertain time! Realize that the people that voted for trump were scared too. We may not agree with their vote, and fight against many of the things that vote represents, but closing doors is how we got here (link here to family gathering survival guide). Bridge the gap focus on the things we agree on, better jobs/wages an economy for all not just the rich, Elisabeth Waron put it best Here.

Image from

Most important is make a plan, have a strategy so you keep being involved, life gets crazy and it's hard to keep up, but this is worth your time. So many people are counting on you to be on the right side of history(If you voted for trump are reading this and would like to bridge the gap click here). Most all organizations have things you can sign up for to keep you engaged. If nothing else follow these organizations on social media so you can keep up with what is changing and what is being stopped. Don't underestimate Social Media more people are getting their news from Facebook then any other source. If you are seeing good reporting on important topics Like and Share! Get in touch with your Representative or Senator when things are going too far. Our elected officials are civil servants, we need to remind them they work for us! Don't forget this works we have already had some success! If you'd like to understand the issues a bit better I'll get links in the titles, one of the most powerful things a person can do is be informed. Now to some potential strategy for change, below that are some of the issues and great organizations already working hard on them.

Strategy One: Identify your strength. If you have time or can make time pick an organization and volunteer, organize or run. If you have funds donate. If all you have is passion, advocate. Read everything you can on the topics be well versed have concise clear rebuttals against bigotry! Be a cheerleader/ supporter make a group that keeps each other accountable, never underestimate how important an encouraging word is, one text a week can mean the difference between giving up and fighting on.

Strategy Two: is the most creative I've seen. Calculate what your taxes would have been under Clintons Tax plan and donate the difference to the organizations that are already working hard to protect the things you care about the most. IE donate, use that donation as a tax right off and trump trump! It really is quite easy to do, this link will give you all the Tax Details

Strategy Three: Get Loud and make it count! Politics can bring out the worst in people this comes out in social media, so in an Ice bucket challenge way, lets challenge ourselves and others to donate a dollar for every political post we make. If we believe in what we are saying lets back it. we vote with every dollar we spend, lets tie that together!

Strategy Four: Justice Jar(like a swear jar but makes a difference) Every time you want to yell at the TV, Radio, Computer, yell! Yell with your wallet, use your anger as a trigger to make the world better. Don't just be frustrated take action! Think of this one as the swear jar for social justices! *this one would bankrupt my house but maybe it will work for you.

Human Rights! A lot of people feel unwelcome cast out or threatened. A small way to counter act that is start wearing a safety pin! I'd like to make this a anti hate symbol across the board, so no matter what you choose to champion please make a habit of this.

The easiest thing you can do with the biggest impact toward counteracting the hate promises of this campaign, is to donate or get involved with the ACLU "For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country." ACLU Facebook

If you want to focus to individual organizations/causes follow the links below.

Women's rights! Planned Parenthood They need your help! funds are always appreciated and we know this administration has them straight in the cross hairs! The great thing about Planned Parenthood is that this is nothing new to them, they are set up to fight with anything you have to help: time, money, campaigning, they are pros but are going to be hurting. propose total abortion ban in Indiana Planned Parenthood on Facebook

Feel like doing more check out 10 ACTIONS / 100 DAYS From the organizers of the Womens March "We did it! On January 21, we came together by the millions, across the globe, to march, speak and make our voices heard. But it doesn’t end here—now is not the time to hang up our marching shoes—it’s time to get our friends, family and community together and make history. That’s why we’re launching a new campaign: 10 Actions for the first 100 Days. Every 10 days we will take action on an issue we all care about, starting today."

LBGT Rights! With Mike Pence being pro conversion therapy and many other hostilities to the LGBT community, this is a scary time for many newly weds, and y'know the whole community! HRC "The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community." HRC Facebook

Immigration Rights! Family's deserve better, humans deserve better then this. Now with the new administration referencing Japanese internment camps for making their police: “We’ve done it based on race, we’ve done it based on religion, we’ve done it based on region,” Mr. Higbie said. “We’ve done it with Iran back — back a while ago. We did it during World War II with Japanese.” We know that must stand up against segregation no matter the supposed justification. Immigrant Defense Project "We aim to abolish a racially biased criminal legal system that violates basic human rights and an immigration system that every year tears hundreds of thousands of immigrants with convictions from their homes, their families, and their communities." Immigrant Defense Project Facebook and the The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) "The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) organizes law students and lawyers to develop and enforce a set of legal and human rights for refugees and displaced persons. Mobilizing direct legal aid and systemic policy advocacy, IRAP serves the world’s most persecuted individuals and empowers the next generation of human rights leaders."

Disability Rights! losing healthcare because of previous known conditions will cause suffering, and could end lives. DREDF "To advance the civil and human rights of people with disabilities through legal advocacy, training, education, and public policy and legislative development." DREDF Facebook

Chalenge hate! The best way to do this is to be well informed. Listen to the people that are living these injustices Blacklivesmatter is a great resource for the injustices that people of color are facing. Reach outside your comfort zone to make friends and learn safe ways to stop harassment. This Cartoon by Maeril is a great start.

Election 2018! You here, now, looking for options means you are smart, passionate and maybe it's time to think of running for office. If thats not your thing okay, there is more you can do. Midterm elections have low turn out so getting people registered to vote and committed to go to the polls is crucial. Also look in to supporting the ladies that are running. Science, National parks and our Planet ! The EPA will need your voice as well. Two great options here Earth Justice "With your tax-deductible gift, Earthjustice will fight in court and on Capitol Hill to: • Preserve magnificent places and wildlife. • Protect people's health. • Advance clean energy. • Combat climate change." and Sierra Club "Throughout its century-plus history, the Sierra Club has been at the forefront of the movement to protect America's wild places, and the beauty, escape, clean water, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities they provide. The Our Wild America campaign will work to create a national network of connected wild lands and marine areas to preserve America's natural, cultural, and recreational heritage."

Education! Our system is very outdate, the changes that are being made are not based facts and is a shame to our country we do need change. however the new secretary of education is has almost no experience in public school system, even sending her own kids to privet schools. School vouters are a complicated topic but what we do know is that when they are use they aren't giving children in need much of any good options. Also we need to take a look at what Pences has said about evolution. Now all of that being said I personally feel its important to note "Highly educated more likely than less educated to hold liberal views" it will not benefit this political administration to help children to achieve their best.

Still want to do more? here are more lists, an overwhelming amount of places ready to help! That alone should give hope. racked, jezebel.

Day 1

So many videos and important sites are coming in daily I've decided not to post them all as individual links but to make Youtube playlist of all the videos

and a Pinterest of all the amazing links, info-graphs, clear arguments etc. . I'll still add the most poignant ones on here as the come in but I want this page to be as clean as possible.

Oh and if this post helped you please share it, there are a lot of people looking for direction in this time of unrest. Also check back from time to time I'll be updating this post with more inspiration and calls to action as they come in.
